Scholastic News

As we are transitioning into the Common Core Curriculum, we are concentrating more on non-fiction text. In addition to our anthology and novels, I love to incorporate magazines such as Scholastic News and National Geographic into my lessons.    My students love the high-interest articles in their “very own” magazine.

Scholastic News Interactive, in combination with your print magazines, allows students of various learning styles and reading levels to be engaged simultaneously in the magazine’s content.  This is an easy way to incorporate technology and differentiate your lesson.

With Text-to-Talk audio support and an alternate-level cover story in every issue, it is a powerful tool to support small group, differentiated reading in your classroom. For example, you might set up small groups as follows:

·   One group reads the print magazines independently.

·       One group reads the print magazines with you.

·       A third group reads the cover story on a classroom computer, using the Text-to-Talk feature for added support.

·       The fourth group reads the alternate-level version of the cover story (written at about 100 Lexile points below the original) on a classroom computer.

What type of non-fiction materials do you use in your class?  I would love to hear from you.

She's a Crafty One

I love anything and everything craftypaint, glitter, stickers, fabric,  hot glue guns, Michaels, AC Moore, and the list goes on and on.  Pinterest is by far the motherload of DIY ideas.  I could spend hours just finding future projects that I would love to try.  Here are a few of my favorites.  Click on the name to see how to make these awesome crafts.

Here is my take on the DIY Jewelry Holder.  I made the top one and my sister made the bottom one.  It was fun and easy to make.

 Materials:
*  Wallpaper remnant
*  All-purpose glue
*  Drill
*  Screw hooks
How-To:
  1. Remove the glass from the shadow box. Cut a wallpaper remnant to fit the back of the box, and adhere with glue.
  2. Create a layout of hooks. Drill holes for screw hooks in the backing. Insert hooks.
  3. Hang shadow box on wall using attached hardware.

Now back to school

I created a fun Place Value Game for my students to practice and reinforce this skill. Students will match up the standard, expanded, and word form for numbers up to the hundreds place. The theme is very cute and my students LOVE playing this game.

I sell this item for $2.00 on my TpT store but because I’m so thankful that you’re following my blog, you can have it here for free.

Monday Night Lineup

Classroom Freebies Manic Monday

Tonight's post is going to be short and sweet. I love Monday night TVThe Bachelor, Real Housewives of Beverly Hills, Vanderpump Rules, and Teen Mom 2.  Oh my!
So, I'm joining Charity over at the Classroom Freebies Blog to share a very useful resource.  This file is 11 pages and includes 20 different journal topics to go along with any story.  This would be great for a center, small groups, or seat work for early finishers.

Gearing up for another week...

I hope that everyone had a great weekend.  I had another fun weekend with my adorable nieces and nephews.  My nephew, Noah, is really starting to show his personality.  Here is a short video of him cracking himself up.

My nieces are a part of a wonderful competitive cheerleading organization called East Coast Nitros.  They are very talented and continue to amaze me every day.  Check out the pic of them below.

Okay, enough family talk.  With Valentine’s Day quickly approaching, I created two Valentine’s cards for my students.  Click here to purchase these cards for $1.00 from my Teacher’s Notebook store.

Happy Hump Day

Happy Hump Day! Well, we’re more than half way through this week. I hope your week is flying by as fast as mine. Every year seems to go by faster than the previous year. I can't believe we are already into January and almost half way through the year.

This year I started implementing the Daily 5 in my classroom. The hardest aspect that I have found is finding meaningful work for students to complete at their seats. I created journal prompts that students can use for any story or novel they are reading. This really cuts down on the "busy work" and allows my students to be show their understanding through a creative outlet.

This 19 page resource contains 36 different writing prompts for higher level thinking. These can be used in isolation with certain skills or even as a center. My students look forward to their journaling rotation with the use of these prompts. Head over to my TpT store to grab this item while it is on sale!

A Monday Freebie!

Classroom Freebies Manic Monday

I've got the Monday Blues :)  After a long, wonderful winter break and a short week last week, I definitely woke up with the Monday Blues today.  I'm ready to get back into the swing of things and start a fresh new year with my little ones.

I'm joining Charity over at the Classroom Freebies Blog to share a fun activity for adding and subtracting money using a menu.  I created a menu that I glued on to construction paper and laminated. I use them every year and my students LOVE it. The document is 9 pages and includes the menu and worksheets for adding and subtracting money. Students pretend they are a waiter or waitress and take orders from eachother in order to add and subtract money. My students love getting to play "waiter" or "waitress" and choose what they want to order.   Click on the link below for your free copy.  Enjoy!

Throughout all of my blog-hopping I have always loved checking out bloggers “Currently” lists.  So I liked up with Farley for the January Currently Linky Party.

Lets try this out...

So, where do I start? My name is Breanne Marsh and I'm in my sixth year teaching 3rd grade. I got my Master's degree in technology and love incorporating technology in any aspect of my teaching. Another thing I love...making worksheets! I know it sounds crazy, but it is a great creative outlet where I can differentiate activities specifically for my students.

Last year I started selling my worksheets on Teachers Pay Teachers. It was so exciting whenever someone was interested in something that I made. I became addicted to it :)

So here I am now, starting a blog. I am planning on highlighting activities that we are working on in my class and hopefullyblogging atleast once a week. I am excited about this new adventure in the world of blogging!

A little about me...

 My siblings...yes, there are six of us.

My youngest niece, Devyn, and I at my sister's wedding.
